Some of the issues I am currently involved with include increasing the proactive involvement of St. Louis City in support of our elected school board.  I believe it is vital to give the people of St. Louis a voice in what happens with our childrens’ education.

As President of the Shaw Neighborhood Improvement Association, I led the executive committee in creation of the Shaw Helping Hands Grant Program.  This program is funded by the association to promote inclusion, equality, and pride in the Shaw neighborhood.

Safety in the 8th Ward is of vital importance to me.  I have spent time working productively in this area over the past several years, partnering with St. Louis Aldermen, the Circuit Attorney’s Office, St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, and the 22nd Judicial Circuit Court to create a CourtWatch program.  This project provides judges with the community’s views concerning specific neighborhood-relevant criminal cases that will appear on their dockets.

Another safety issue that concerns me is juvenile crime.  I entered into a pilot program with the City of St. Louis’ Restorative Justice Program in order to  keep our young people out of the criminal system and help them reconnect with the community.  This partnership brings first time juvenile offenders together with their victims to foster a sense of responsibility and an understanding of the consequences of their actions.
